Organizing your feeds
Folders
Group your followed feeds by topic or source so your timeline stays easy to browse.
Updated
Folders are the simplest way to organize Newsbin. A folder is just a container for feeds you’ve followed: “Tech,” “News,” “Sports,” whatever fits how you read.
Creating and filling folders
- Create a folder, give it a name, and drag feeds into it (or assign a feed to a folder when you add it).
- A feed lives in one folder at a time. If you want the same articles to appear in several places based on their content rather than their source, that’s what smart groups are for.
- Selecting a folder shows every unread article across the feeds inside it.
- Folders can hold other folders. Nest “Formula 1” inside “Sports” and selecting “Sports” still shows everything, subfolders included.
Moving feeds around
You don’t have to drag to reorganize. Right-click (or long-press) any feed in the sidebar and you’ll find:
- Add to folder or Move to folder, with every destination listed. Nested folders show their full path, like “Sports ▸ Formula 1,” so you always know where something is going.
- Remove from folder, which sends the feed back to the top level of your sidebar.
- New folder, right inside the move menu. It creates the folder and moves your feed into it in one step, so there’s no need to set up the destination first.
The same menu appears on folders themselves, which is how you nest one folder inside another.
Selecting more than one thing
On Mac and iPad you can select several feeds and folders at once: Command-click to add to a selection, Shift-click for a range. Everything above then applies to the whole selection.
- Drag the selection into a folder together.
- Use Move to folder or New folder to relocate the batch in one step.
- Read all and Clear reads act on every selected item, and the article list can show the combined selection.
- Delete removes the whole batch, after asking you to confirm.
Folders vs. smart groups
They solve different problems:
| Folders | Smart Groups | |
|---|---|---|
| Organized by | The source (which feed) | The content (tags, age, sources) |
| Membership | You place feeds manually | Articles match automatically |
| Best for | “Show me everything from my tech blogs” | “Show me anything mentioning climate from the last week” |
Use folders for tidy browsing by source, and smart groups when you want articles to gather themselves by subject.
Tips
- Dropping a feed on a folder files it there; dropping it on the “Following” header or at the bottom of the section moves it back to the top level.
- Empty folders are cleaned up automatically to avoid duplicates cluttering your sidebar.
- Folder layout syncs across your devices through iCloud.
